MacroFab selected Knowi as their business intelligence tool after an extensive multi-way trial

MacroFab's Journey towards BI transformation with Knowi

"Knowi trounced other business intelligence tools in our extensive multi-way trials"

BACKGROUND

Phil Bryant, VP of Business Intelligence at Macrofab, led the search for a comprehensive data visualization and business intelligence tool. With a diverse user base including both technical specialists and non-tech users from various departments, the company sought a solution that could cater to all users without compromising functionality for either group

CHALLENGE

The team conducted extensive trials with multiple business intelligence tools, including Grow, PowerBI, Mode, trevor.io, GoodData, Klipfolio, Domo, Sisense, and Knowi. The goal was to find a tool that could accommodate the needs of a varied user base, supporting both advanced data visualization and analytics for technical specialists while also empowering business users to conduct their exploratory data analysis.

SOLUTION

Knowi emerged as the winner from these trials. It was selected not only for its data visualization capabilities but also for its thoughtful data architecture. This architecture enables a suite of elegant features, including the ability to live-update the contents of a dataset incrementally via API and query a source, returning a dataset that can be immediately re-queried to produce a transformed/derived dataset. This new dataset can be held on to, persisted in a different destination, or even rewritten back to the original source.

"Knowi trounced other business intelligence tools in our extensive multi-way trials. We built the highest number of useful dashboards the fastest using Knowi – a clear win. After the trials, we migrated everything we made to Knowi, as we didn't try out any canned use cases, only real-world 'need' cases."

BENEFITS

Knowi’s drag & drop query builder and its natural language processing (NLP) were crucial features that appealed to non- technical users. Even those with a software engineering background, found the visual builder faster and easier for certain tasks. The query builder also provides useful information about data even before a query is complete, helping users understand their data better.Technical users can quickly refine visualizations on a dashboard by injecting SQL into the widget, eliminating the need to go back to the database, query, or settings. Other “power” features include alerting capabilities, with both basic threshold alerting and anomaly alerting based on standard deviation.
