Migrating from Domo comes down to one asymmetry: your data exports cleanly, but your logic does not. Datasets come out via Domo’s API as CSV, while Magic ETL dataflows, Beast Mode calculations, and card layouts are Domo-specific and must be rebuilt in the destination platform.
Quick Summary (TL;DR)
- Domo’s Datasets API exports any dataset’s rows as CSV, and dataset metadata and schemas are retrievable programmatically.
- Magic ETL dataflow logic and Beast Mode calculations are proprietary to Domo and do not import into any other BI platform; they get rebuilt, not moved.
- If your raw data still lives in your source systems or warehouse, you are migrating connections and logic, not data, which is a much smaller project.
- Inventory before you move: most Domo instances carry years of unused dataflows and cards, and migrating usage-ranked assets typically cuts scope dramatically.
- Run the old and new platforms in parallel on your top dashboards for at least one reporting cycle before cutover.
- Teams are planning exits now because of Domo’s sale process and consumption pricing; the same playbook applies whether you move this quarter or just want a plan on the shelf.

Why Teams Are Planning Domo Exits in 2026
Two forces are driving migration planning this year. Domo is in a lender-mandated sale process with a July 31, 2026 deadline for a signed purchase agreement, which we covered in what the acquisition means for customers. And the consumption credit model keeps surfacing as the top complaint from long-time users, detailed in our Domo pricing breakdown.
Neither means you must leave. It means knowing your exit cost is now basic vendor management. This guide maps what that exit actually involves.
What Exports Cleanly Out of Domo
Domo has real, documented APIs, and the data layer is portable. Per Domo’s developer documentation, the Datasets API exports any dataset’s contents as CSV, retrieves schemas and metadata, and supports SQL queries against datasets. The Python SDK wraps all of this for scripted bulk export.
- Dataset rows: full CSV export per dataset via API or UI.
- Dataset schemas and metadata: names, columns, types, owners, update timestamps.
- Derived datasets: the outputs of your dataflows are themselves datasets, so the results of years of transformation work can be exported even though the transformation logic cannot.
- User and access inventory: user lists and permissions, useful for planning roles in the destination.
That last point about derived datasets matters. If a Magic ETL flow took five sources and produced one clean executive dataset, you can land that output in your warehouse today and preserve the result while you rebuild the logic.
What Does Not Transfer
- Magic ETL dataflows: the visual tile logic is Domo-proprietary. No other platform imports it. Each flow gets re-expressed in the destination’s transformation layer.
- Beast Mode calculations: Domo-specific expression syntax attached to cards and datasets. They can be inventoried through Domo’s governance datasets, but each formula is rewritten in the new tool.
- Cards and dashboard layouts: rebuilt in the destination. In practice this is the least painful part, and most teams treat it as a chance to retire clutter.
- Alerts, schedules, and subscriptions: recreated in the new platform.
The Migration Plan, Phase by Phase
Phase 1: Inventory and cut scope
Pull your instance inventory: every dataset, dataflow, card, and Beast Mode, ranked by last-accessed and usage. Years-old Domo instances routinely carry a long tail of assets nobody has opened in a year. Migrating the top slice by usage, and archiving exports of the rest, typically shrinks the project far below what the asset count suggests.
Phase 2: Decide your source of truth
If your raw data still lives in databases, SaaS tools, and APIs that Domo merely ingests, point the new platform at those sources directly and skip bulk data migration entirely. Export Domo datasets only where Domo itself became the system of record, which is usually the derived, transformed outputs.
Phase 3: Rebuild the logic layer
This is the real work: translating Magic ETL flows and Beast Modes into the destination’s model. Budget it by counting flows feeding your top dashboards, not total flows. This is also where destination choice changes effort: a platform that joins sources directly at query time removes the staging steps that many Magic ETL flows exist to perform, so a portion of flows get replaced by a single cross-source query rather than rebuilt tile by tile.
Phase 4: Parallel-run and cut over
Rebuild the top 10 to 20 dashboards first, run both platforms through at least one full reporting cycle, and reconcile numbers before switching anyone off Domo. Cut over team by team, keep the Domo archive exports, and time the final contract decision to your renewal date.
Agentic Analytics Platform for Any Data.
Knowi migrates Domo teams as part of onboarding: we map your datasets and dataflows, rebuild the logic layer with you, and connect your sources directly, SQL, NoSQL, and APIs, without a warehouse in between.
What you can do with Knowi:
- Connect SQL, NoSQL, REST APIs, and cloud data warehouses in one platform.
- Build dashboards without moving data into a separate warehouse.
- Ask questions in natural language and get answers backed by the underlying query.
- Embed dashboards, AI assistants, and analytics directly into your application.
- Chat with documents, spreadsheets, PDFs, and operational data from a single interface.
- Keep sensitive data private with cloud, hybrid, or self-hosted deployment options.
Used by SaaS, healthcare, manufacturing, IoT, and enterprise teams that need analytics across multiple data sources without the complexity of traditional BI stacks.
Private AI No ETL Required Native NoSQL On-prem deployment available
How Long Does It Take?
Scope drives everything, but the shape is consistent. A focused deployment (a few sources, dozens of active cards) parallel-runs within weeks. A large instance with hundreds of active dataflows is a quarter-scale project, dominated by Phase 3. The worst plan is starting the inventory the month your renewal is due; the credit report and asset inventory cost nothing to pull today.
We have run this playbook before. When Atlassian shut down Chartio in 2022, we migrated Chartio teams on exactly this phased model, and the pattern holds for Domo: data first, logic second, dashboards last.TRY KNOWI

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I export my data from Domo?
Yes. Domo’s Datasets API exports any dataset’s rows as CSV and retrieves schemas and metadata, and the UI supports per-dataset export. Bulk export is scriptable via Domo’s Python SDK.
Can I export Magic ETL dataflows from Domo?
Not in a portable form. Dataflow outputs are datasets and export cleanly, but the transformation logic itself is Domo-proprietary and must be rebuilt in the destination platform.
Can I export Beast Mode calculations?
You can inventory Beast Modes through Domo’s governance datasets so nothing is lost, but the formulas use Domo-specific syntax and are rewritten in the new tool.
Do I need a data warehouse to leave Domo?
No. If your sources are still live, a platform that connects to databases and APIs directly can replace Domo without adding a warehouse. A warehouse is only required if you choose a destination that assumes one.
How long does a Domo migration take?
Small deployments parallel-run within weeks; large instances with hundreds of active dataflows are typically a one-quarter project. Usage-based scope cutting in the inventory phase is the biggest accelerator.
Should I migrate before Domo’s sale closes?
Not necessarily, but build the plan now. Domo must sign a sale agreement by July 31, 2026 and close by November 30, 2026, and knowing your exit cost before your next renewal is leverage whether you move or stay.
